A William Butler Yeats quote sets the framework for this zine's title. It reads: "Life is a journey...up a spiral staircase; as we grow older, we cover the ground we have covered before, only higher up; as we look down the winding stair below us, we measure our progress by the number of places where we were but no longer are." I started the zine with research into the word 'spiral' seeking answers to some questions. What are the different kinds? How long has the symbol been around? How have different cultures utilized the symbol? What are its different meanings? The entire back side of the zine contains drawings and notes from this effort. We see the spiral shape in so many things and yet we don't think anything of it...normally. You can see it in a snail shell, the capital of an Ionic Column, the heating coil of a stove, a corkscrew, and even a Slinky. What other objects come to mind?
